The Zhouyi, also known as the Book of Changes, is one of the oldest and most influential Chinese classic texts. The hexagram method within the Zhouyi is a profound divination technique that has been used for thousands of years to gain insights into various aspects of life, including decision - making, understanding the future, and self - reflection. In this blog, we will illustrate the Zhouyi hexagram method step by step.
Materials Needed
50 yarrow stalks (traditionally) or three coins (a modern alternative)Using Yarrow Stalks
1. First, take 50 yarrow stalks and set one aside. You are left with 49 stalks. This represents the separation of the one from the many, symbolizing the creation of the universe.
2. Randomly divide the 49 stalks into two piles. This represents the separation of yin and yang.
3. Take one stalk from one of the piles and place it between the ring finger and little finger of your left hand. This symbolizes the creation of humans.
4. Divide each of the two piles into groups of four. Count the remaining stalks (either 1, 2, 3, or 4) in each pile and combine them with the stalk between your fingers. This process is repeated three times to get a single line of the hexagram. A remainder of 36, 32, 28, or 24 corresponds to a yang or yin line, with some lines being changing or static.
5. Repeat the above steps six times to form a complete hexagram.
Using Coins
1. Take three coins. Each coin has a yin side and a yang side. Shake the coins in your hand and then toss them onto a flat surface.
2. A combination of three yang sides gives a solid yang line, three yin sides gives a broken yin line, and a mix of two yang and one yin or two yin and one yang also determines a line type (either changing or static).
3. Repeat the coin - tossing process six times to form a hexagram.
Once you have obtained a hexagram, you can refer to the Zhouyi text to interpret its meaning. Each hexagram has unique symbolic significance and can provide guidance on different life situations.
In conclusion, the Zhouyi hexagram method is a fascinating and complex divination system. It not only offers a way to seek answers but also allows us to understand the ancient Chinese philosophy of change and balance. Whether you use yarrow stalks or coins, the process of creating a hexagram can be a meditative and thought - provoking experience.
