Using yarrow stalks is the more ancient and traditional method. Here are the general steps: First, prepare 50 yarrow stalks. Take out one stalk and set it aside, leaving 49 stalks. Then, divide the 49 stalks into two piles randomly. From one of the piles, pick out one stalk and put it between the ring finger and little finger of the left hand. Next, group the remaining stalks in each pile into groups of four. Count the remaining stalks in each pile after grouping. Using coins is a more modern and convenient way. Usually, three copper coins are used. Each coin has two sides, which can be regarded as yin and yang. When shaking the coins, toss them onto a flat surface. If all three coins show the yang side, it represents a yang line; if all three show the yin side, it represents a yin line. If there are two yang sides and one yin side, it is also a yang line, but a changing yang line. If there are two yin sides and one yang side, it is a yin line, and it can be a changing yin line. Repeat this tossing process six times to get a hexagram.
