The I Ching, also known as the Book of Changes, is an ancient Chinese text that has been used for divination and philosophical guidance for thousands of years. One of the traditional methods of divination with the I Ching involves using I Ching Cao, or yarrow stalks. In this blog, we will explore the methods of divination using I Ching Cao.
Preparing for the Divination
First, you need to have a set of 50 yarrow stalks. Remove one stalk and set it aside. This stalk represents the Tao, the unchanging principle. You are left with 49 stalks for the actual divination process.
The Divination Process
Step 1: Randomization: Hold the 49 stalks in your hands and focus on your question. Then, randomly divide the stalks into two piles, one in each hand. This represents the separation of heaven and earth. Step 2: Taking One Stalk: Take one stalk from the pile in your right hand and place it between the little finger and ring finger of your left hand. This represents the emergence of humanity. Step 3: Grouping the Stalks: Divide the remaining stalks in your left hand into groups of four. Count the remaining stalks (either 1, 2, 3, or 4) and place them between the ring finger and middle finger of your left hand. Do the same for the stalks in your right hand. Step 4: Counting the Remaining Stalks: Combine the stalks between your fingers and count them. The result will be either 9 or 5. This is the first change. Step 5: Repeating the Process: Repeat steps 1 - 4 two more times. After three changes, you will get a number that corresponds to a line in the I Ching. A 9 or 7 represents a yang (solid) line, and a 6 or 8 represents a yin (broken) line. Step 6: Building the Hexagram: Repeat the entire process six times to get a total of six lines, which form a hexagram. Each hexagram in the I Ching has a specific meaning and interpretation.Interpretation
Once you have obtained a hexagram, you can refer to the I Ching text for its meaning. The interpretation can provide insights into your question, offering guidance on various aspects of life such as relationships, career, and personal growth.
In conclusion, divination using I Ching Cao is a complex and ancient method that requires patience and focus. It offers a unique way to seek answers and gain wisdom from the I Ching. While it may seem daunting at first, with practice, you can master the process and use it to gain valuable insights into your life.
