The Process

Step 1: Remove One Stalk: Take the 50 yarrow stalks and remove one, leaving 49. This removed stalk represents the Taiji, the ultimate principle in Chinese philosophy. Step 2: Divide into Two Piles: Randomly divide the 49 stalks into two piles, held in your left and right hands respectively. This symbolizes the separation of Yin and Yang. Step 3: Take One Stalk: Take one stalk from the right - hand pile and place it between the little finger and the ring finger of your left hand. This represents the addition of human beings to the Yin - Yang balance. Step 4: Group the Stalks: Count the stalks in the left - hand pile by fours.
