The I Ching, also known as the Book of Changes, is one of the oldest and most influential Chinese classics. It has been used for divination and philosophical exploration for thousands of years. In this blog, we will introduce The three most commonly used divination methods in the I Ching.
1. Coin Tossing Method
This is a relatively simple and popular method. You need three coins, preferably copper coins. Hold the coins in your hands, focus your mind on the question you want to ask, and then shake the coins and toss them onto a flat surface. Each coin has two sides, representing yin and yang. The combination of the three coins' results forms a hexagram line. Repeat this process six times to get a complete hexagram. For example, if all three coins show the yang side, it represents a solid yang line; if all show the yin side, it represents a broken yin line. After getting the hexagram, you can refer to the I Ching text to interpret the meaning.
2. Yarrow Stalk Method
This is a more traditional and complex method. First, you need 50 yarrow stalks. Remove one stalk and set it aside. Then, divide the remaining 49 stalks into two piles randomly. Take one stalk from one of the piles and put it between the ring finger and little finger of your left hand. Then, count the stalks in each pile in groups of four. Based on the remainders, you can determine the first line of the hexagram. Repeat this process five more times to form a complete hexagram. This method requires more patience and precision, but it is considered to have a deeper connection with the ancient divination traditions.
3. Digital Method
In modern times, with the development of technology, the digital method has emerged. You can use an I Ching app or online tool. Simply input your question and let the program generate a hexagram for you. Although this method is more convenient, some people believe that it may lack the spiritual connection of the traditional methods. However, it still provides a quick and accessible way to get I Ching Divination results.
In conclusion, these three divination methods in the I Ching each have their own characteristics. Whether you choose the simple coin - tossing method, the traditional yarrow stalk method, or the modern digital method, the I Ching offers a unique way to gain insights and guidance. It is not only a tool for divination but also a source of profound philosophical wisdom that has withstood the test of time.
